Antivirus for Small Business: What Changes
Business use changes three things: licensing legality, the need for central visibility, and the cost of downtime. Consumer free tiers are licensed for personal use only and are not an option.

Licensing comes first
Bitdefender, ESET, Sophos, Trend Micro and Microsoft all sell small-business tiers. Using a free consumer edition across office machines breaches the licence and leaves you without support when it matters.
Central management is the actual product
A console showing which endpoints are protected, which are out of date and which raised detections is what distinguishes a business product. Without it you have no idea whether the machine in the back office has been unprotected for six months.
When to step up to EDR
Once you hold customer data, process payments, or have more than a handful of staff, endpoint detection and response — with recorded telemetry you can investigate after the fact — becomes proportionate. Microsoft Defender for Business is a common first step for organisations already on Microsoft 365.
Non-negotiables regardless of product
Tested offsite backups, multi-factor authentication on every account, prompt patching, and separate administrator accounts. Those four fail less often than any endpoint product.
